Notes on Genre

The word 'Genre' is the French word for 'type'. Each genre has a set of conventions and this makes the genre easier to identify.

Genre can be be defined as patterns/forms/style/structure which transcend individual art products, and which supervise both their construction by artist and their reading by audience. This explains genre as the space between artists, audience and text itself. There has to be a connection with the artist and its audience.

Lyrics tend to establish a general feeling or mood rather than offering a coherent meaning. music videos  tend to make use of the tempo of the track to drive the editing. While some videos transcend genre, others can be easily categorised. These features may be reflected in the types of miss en scene, themes, performance, cinematography and editing style.

While some music videos transcend genres, others can be more easily categorsied. Some, but not all, music channels concentrate on particular music genres. If you watch these channels over a period of time, you will be able to identify a range of distinct features which characterise the videos of different genres. These features might be reflected in types of mise en scene, themes, performance, camera and editing styles.
